Monoprints of Empowerment; Strength in Vulnerability

The focus of my practice is the portrayal and celebration of the strength that comes from vulnerability.

A Sexual Violence Survey by the Central Statistics Office (CSO) found that “only 5% of those that experienced sexual violence as an adult have reported it to the police”. The intention of this work is to spark conversations and shift societal perceptions of sexual violence in Ireland. By delving into uncomfortable topics, my work prompts viewers to reassess their realities.

Monoprinting is a process where each print is a one-off, capturing a moment that can never be replicated. Collecting and immersing myself in research pictures of myself informed my research. This served as a reminder of my insecurities and forced me to confront my experience with sexual violence, allowing me to express raw emotion and authenticity in the work. By confronting this uncomfortable experience, I have been able to reveal genuine personal strength. However, this can for the viewer, be perceived as vulnerability.
